11-Year-Old Summits Mount Kilimanjaro
This summer looked a little different for 11-year-old Olivia Trainor. Trainor, a rising sixth-grader at Chenery Upper Elementary School, hiked Mount Kilimanjaro with her mother, Brittany Caruso, last month. The journey up the Tanzanian volcano, the highest peak in Africa, took nine days—seven up to the summit and two for the way down. “I loved seeing the glaciers. It’s definitely a different space that I haven’t seen before,” Trainor said. She and Caruso trained for five months to be physically prepared for the long days of hiking that summiting entailed.
