From the Bottom of the Ocean to Outer Space: How Far Will We Go for AI?
Everyone is talking about the next AI model.I’m becoming convinced the bigger story is the infrastructure required to run them. This week I came across two seemingly unrelated stories. China is experimenting with underwater AI data centers powered by offshore wind and cooled by seawater. SpaceX is exploring orbital AI compute powered by the sun and cooled by the vacuum of space. The threads that bind these stories tell us something profound.Building AI infrastructure on land is becoming difficult enough that humanity is seriously considering placing data centers on the bottom of the ocean and in orbit. The AI revolution isn’t just about models, GPUs or applications. It may become the largest physical infrastructure buildout since electrification, requiring massive investments in power generation, transmission, fiber networks and industrial construction.Long after we stop arguing about which model won the latest benchmark, the infrastructure built to support them will still be standing. The question is whether something this consequential should be built solely for the benefit of a few companies—or for the benefit of all mankind. My latest op-ed:From the Bottom of the Ocean to Outer Space: How Far Will We Go for AI?#AI #Infrastructure #DataCenters #Energy #Cloud #Innovation #Technology #ArtificialIntelligence
