Nineteen firefighters and EMS personnel were injured as they responded to a five-alarm fire in Flushing, Queens on Saturday, as three Depression-era homes were engulfed in flames. Two civilians were also injured, one of them critically. First responders received the call just before 10 a.m. Saturday for the fire at 41st Road and College Point Boulevard. FDNY Chief of Operations Kevin Woods told reporters on Saturday afternoon that the massive response was to ensure “proper relief” for firefighters and EMS on the scene as they battled the blaze and rescued those inside. EMS Chief Stacey Scanlon told reporters that two civilians were injured, and that one of them is "in serious condition." Roughly 12 people are displaced due to the damage to their homes, and are being helped by the Red Cross. The fire is now under control, according to Woods, and an investigation has been launched to determine what caused it. The FDNY chief said that the three houses that caught fire were built in 1930, entirely out of wood, as was still common practice at the time. “Fire travels very very rapidly, [it’s] very difficult for us to get ahead of these fires and extinguish [them],” he told reporters on the scene Saturday afternoon. Woods noted that a person was trapped in the building most damaged by the fire, and that firefighters got to them through the second floor, “without the protection of a hose line, under high heat and zero visibility.” Woods commended the “phenomenal work” by firefighters in preventing the fire across the three buildings from spreading to two more adjacent buildings with similar construction.
