Fire lookout tower closures put backcountry at risk

For more than a decade during fire season, roughly May 1u2014November or even later, three staffed fire lookout towers have reduced the risk of breakout wildfires in southern Riverside and Orange Counties and most of San Diego County. u00a0 Two of these towers, High Point and Boucher Hill, are located on Palomar Mountain and are staffed by volunteers from the Forest Fire Lookout Association.u00a0 The third tower, Los Pinos, is located in the mountains south of Interstate 8 and is staffed by U.S. Forest Service fire lookouts. u00a0 All three towers report smoke activity to the U.S. Forest Service, Cleveland <a href="https://www.valleycenter.com/?post_type=oht_article&p=111481">[…]</a>
