Court seeks to determine murder suspect’s mental state
Criminal proceedings have been suspended for Thomas Caleb Butler, 32, the suspect accused in the fatal May 20 attack on 69-year-old Kerry Sheron outside his well-known Escondido u201cTrump House.u201d Judge Richard Monroy, Friday paused the murder case after Butler refused to leave his jail cell, ordering a mental competency evaluation before a July 17 CARE (Community Assistance, Recovery and Empowerment) Court in the Central Courthouse in downtown San Diego. A CARE court is a civil court that, among other things, provides individuals who have schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders with treatment.
